Iron infusion in the outpatient and inpatient setting has been transformed by the emergence of rapid iron infusion preparations. The treatment is not without risks, including anaphylaxis, arthralgia-myalgia syndrome and cutaneous staining in the setting of extravasation. The indications for use of iron infusions will be discussed, contraindications and potential pitfalls will be addressed. This talk will address delivery of iron infusions in advanced pregnancy, menorrhagia and unexplained iron deficiency. Data regarding the use of premedications, and post-iron infusion investigations and follow up will be presented.
